Helpful Tips for the School Year
We all want our children to be successful. As parents, we hold a very important role in whether our children will succeed. Listed are a few ideas to help our kids succeed in school.
- Teach your child that school attendance is very important. Kids learn from example; if we do not value the importance of being to places on time, neither will our children. When kids are late for school it often times sets a tone for their entire day.
- Teach children the value of hard work. Don’t let your child blame others such as their teacher for their own mistakes. Mistakes can be valuable learning lessons and hard work does pay off.
- Believe in your child with high but realistic expectations. Help them believe in themselves.
- Set a daily routine for homework, meals and chores and try to stick to it.
- Offer to help at your child’s school. If you work during the school day, check and see what other help you can offer for take home projects or evening activities at the school.
- Make sure you know your children’s friends and that you invite them to come over to your house when possible.
- Teach your children to have manners and respect for others.
- Find time to spend together as a family.
- Talk to you kids about drugs, peer pressure and other issues that they need to avoid. Having your kids know that they can come to you with a question or concern is huge as kids get older.
- Always remind your kids that you love them. You might not like each other some days but the love thing is always there and we all need to be reminded that we are loved.
Every child is different and no two kids will react the same in all situations. In the busy world we are in it is so easy to forget about the basics. Some days it is hard to get kids to school with homework, lunch and anything else they may need and do it with a smile. Help teach them to plan the night before with clothes picked out and homework put into their backpacks. Everyone’s day will be much better when it starts off calm.
Enjoy the short time left before the start of school.
